Acorn Children’s Hospice
The hospice provides specialist palliative nursing care for babies, children and young people across West Midlands and Gloucestershire.
This transformational project involved upgrading the children’s bedrooms at the hospice, which are used for end-of-life care, symptom management, emergency and planned short breaks.
Challenge
To provide a comfortable yet practical and clinical space suitable for the comfort and care of children with complex medical conditions and needs.
The building was to be retained in its current form and remodelled internally to provide a more suitable environment with modernised building services and design solutions.
Solution
The M&E design for the complete building was completed and as part of the refurbishment provided a new air-conditioning facility. Radiant ceiling panels were also installed within corridors instead of typical wall mounted ones to minimise the risk of infection.
Outcome
The approximately 13,500-square-foot building took nine months to complete, transforming the building into a state-of-the-art environment, including a brand new, purpose-built arts and crafts room called Isabella’s Place.
