Maplefields SEN School Corby
In line with its commitment to improve the provision of special educational needs (SEN) facilities, Northampton County Council wanted to build a new primary and secondary school in Corby.
Challenge
Maplefields was one of the first schools to be built using the newly revised Department of Children’s Schools and Families (DCSF) criteria for carbon emissions reductions (60% lower than 2002 allowed levels).
Solution
A key objective of the project was to ensure that it achieved the desired ‘very good’ BREEAM rating, by meeting the carbon emissions targets through a combination of biomass fuel boilers and solar thermal panels.
All M&E services were designed to utilise the latest low-energy building techniques and included natural ventilation with heavy thermal mass, and power factor correction and the building also featured additional sustainable initiatives such as a sedum roof and rainwater harvesting.
Outcome
Maplefields SEN school is now an inspiring, efficient environment that is transforming special needs provision in north Northamptonshire as well as meeting the toughest environmental standards.
